Pay it Forward

Paying it forward is when you do a good deed to a random person and then instead of them paying it back they pay it forward to more people. For the pay it forward project I partnered up with Lindsay Felice. The first thing we did for this project was we baked a cake and then gave it to my grandma. I think my grandma really liked the cake because she seemed really happy and everything.

For the second pay it forward Lindsay and I went to the park and did random niceness to people. We complimented some little kids playing basketball and some others skating. They seemed pretty happy whenever we would say something nice but they probably also thought we were just weird. We also offered to help rake some guys yard but I think he was a little scared by us and just told us that he was fine doing it himself.

For the final pay it forward Lindsay and I picked flowers and gave them to her moms friend. Lindsay's moms friend is having something removed soon and so she was having a party. Lindsay and I picked some flowers and made a bouquet and delivered them to her moms friend. I think she enjoyed them a lot because she seemed really happy. I think she really liked them.

Querencia Clipboard

My Querencia

A querencia is when you are doing something or are somewhere where you feel safe and powerful and most like yourself. I think that my querencia would be music. I really love music and I just don’t think I would be the same without it. Music is my life and I think that I feel most like myself and I feel most safe when I am listening to it. I like to have music playing when I do my homework because it motivates me and puts me in a good mood. In a way it helps me focus on my homework and makes me more comfortable where I am and with what I am doing. When I’m listening to music it really inspires me and it helps me think more creatively. It puts me in a powerful state of mind and makes me feel at ease.

I really don’t have one type of music I like. I like a lot of different genres and none of the music I listen to sound the same. I listen to rock, heavy metal, folk, indie, alternative, classic rock, electronic/techno, a little hip hop, and more. As you can see I really like to listen to a wide variety of music. A lot of songs help me express my emotions and how I am feeling. This makes me feel powerful and at ease because if I need to let something out certain songs can help me let out how I feel. For example, if I’m angry I would listen to something like “Sugar” by System of a Down or if I’m sad or depressed I’ll listen to slower depressing songs like “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” by Death Cab For Cutie or “I Won’t Ever Be Happy Again” by Bright Eyes.

Music isn’t just something that you listen to…it can be much more than that. It can help you complete certain tasks, it can give you advice, or teach y our lessons, it can be a hobby, or it can just be something you really love. For me it’s a combination of all these things. Not only do I really love music but it’s also my querencia.

Featurecast from the Past

Project Purpose:
To understand the difference between Cause/Effect Relationships and Correlations. To understand how and why major events in history are connected and intertwined (think yarn activity!). To research a major event from U.S. history in order to understand why it is significant and how it relates to other major events. To understand features of a feature article and podcast and to be able to create a feature article or podcast about your major event in history.

Project Requirements:
To present the 5Ws of your major event to the class. To write/peer edit/revise a feature article or podcast. To have at least three drafts in your Writing Portfolio. To present a polished version of your feature article or podcast on Media Night, as well as posting it online to our Team Featurecast from the Past web page.

Specific Concepts Learned:
One concept I learned was why Martin Luther King Jr. was important. He was important because of how he was fighting to end segretation. His "I Have A Dream" speech impacted many people. His speech talked about how he wanted no segregation or racism in America and how one day everyone would be equal. Another concept I leared was the details of Martin Luther King Jr's assasination. He was shot on April 4, 1968 at around 6 pm. He was on the balcony of his motel room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennesee.

Challenges:
One challenge that I went through during this project is that my podcast would'nt save. I re-did my podcast about 5 times. Finally, the day that it was due my podcast still wasn't showing up in my documents. I overcame this by re-recording my podcast at my house. Then, I had to burn it onto a CD and I brought it to media night early so that there was time to put it on a computer for people to listen to.

Real-World Significance:
The real-world significance to this project is that this happened in real life. This has taught me about all the segregation and racism and how MLK Jr. helped stop it.
